5S - Good Housekeeping Technique

5S is the acronym for 5 Japanese words; Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke. It is the Japanese technique of Good Housekeeping and Workplace Organisation. 5S is one of the essential pillars for productivity and quality for any company, regardless of the industry it is from.

Although the concept of 5S is deceptively simple, implementing and sustaining 5S is not easy; and many of our clients have found that engaging the services of a committed and experienced consultant can go a long way to prevent and overcome the difficulties of 5S implementation.

Our managing consultant, Mr Lam Chun See was one of the pioneers in promoting and teaching 5S in Singapore. Mr Lam received his training in 5S and other productivity techniques in Japan at the Japan Productivity Center in 1985 and 1989. He was also carefully guided and nurtured by Japanese experts attached to the Singapore National Productivity Board from 1984 to 1992.

Since 1986, Mr Lam has assisted numerous companies in Singapore and Malaysia in the area of 5S implementation; through both training and consultancy. He has trained many overseas consultants through programmes hosted by Spring Singapore and the Singapore Productivity Association.

Our consultants can guide you in all the stages of 5S implementation; from formation of the 5S committee, to guiding the departmental 5S facilitators and project teams. Some of the organisations that have benefited from our 5S consultancy services are: Sime Rengo Packaging Singapore Ltd, Asahi Techno Vision (S) Pte Ltd, Stanpack Industries Pte Ltd, Mitsui Copper Foil (M) Sdn Bhd, SCI Manufacturing Singapore Pte Ltd and Gates Rubber Company (S) Pte Ltd, Sumitomo Chemical Singapore Pte Ltd and Idemitsu Lube (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

Besides consultancy, we can also design in-house training programmes to suit your company's needs. Some of the 5S training programmes that we have developed for our clients include:

  • 5S Management Workshop
  • 5S Facilitators Course
  • 5S Action Course (also available in Mandarin and Malay)
  • 5S for the Office
  • 5S Auditing Course (How to Organise a 5S Competition)

The 5S Facilitators Course is particularly well-received. Many companies have run this in-house programme. They include: ODE, SIS '88 Pte Ltd, Asahi Techno Vision (S) Pte Ltd, Asean Bintulu Fertilizer Sdn Bhd, Petronas Penapisan Melaka Sdn Bhd, MTBE/Polypropylene Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Petronas Management Training Sdn Bhd, Ethylene/Polyethylene Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Recently, we completed company-wide training for all the staff of SUMITOMO CHEMICAL SINGAPORE PTE LTD and affiliated companies, including subcontractors, in their Jurong Island complex.
